Indy K.
8 Years Old
'Untitled'

This is a remarkably complex abstraction, with the compositional tumult of a Miró painting, yet with a softness of palette that recalls Mary Cassatt or Childe Hassam.

As for the subject matter, one does not get the impression that Indy was making a formal attempt at Surrealism, as much as perhaps giving a window into her subconscious reality. Though one cannot help but wonder if the "eye" was being employed as the Surrealists often did, as a sort of portal between the external and internal worlds.

The only other easily identifiable element is what appears to be the outline of an aardvark type creature - though quite colorfully re-imagined. Most fascinatingly, the nocturnal mammal just happens to be symbolically associated with introspection and the subconscious. Which may be the artist trying to tell us something about her state of mind at the time.
